In the past few decades, women have made huge gains in education across the globe to the point that they have surpassed men in tertiary education. The percentage of women living in wealthy countries who have had some form of higher education is 33% compared to 28% for men. However, fewer women go on to earn PhDs. Many women might be deterred from a PhD program because of the time commitment at a point in their lives that they are thinking about starting a family. Although women have advanced greatly in the realm of education, they do not necessarily have better job opportunities than men. Other factors contribute to the job opportunities available to women, such as cultural attitudes and readily available child care. So, education does not alone eliminate the wage gap between men and women.
