Highly Skilled May Wait Less for Visas

On Tuesday November 29, the House of Representatives passed a bill to improve legal immigration in the United States that could potentially decrease the time period that skilled workers have to wait before receiving a visa. With this legislation, the current country limits on the number of employment-based green cards will be eliminated; these green cards will rather be given on a first-come-first-served basis. Skilled immigrants from India and China will benefit the most from this legislation due to their knowledge in science and technology. Although immigrants from these two countries would benefit, there would be many countries that would still face backlogs. This new immigration bill eliminates the country limits on the number of green cards allowed per country, but it does not increase the total number of green cards available. Therefore, the backlogs would merely be redistributed rather than completely eliminated.
