This article asserts since the 1980s, while slow, the nation has seen an increase in the percentage of women receiving paid maternity leave. From 2006 to 2008, a little more than 50% of working received some paid maternity leave. This coincides with our class discussion concerning the increase in labor force participation for women given higher access to birth control which allows them to pursue a career without worrying about families and reproduction. Now that more employers are offering paid maternity leave, the labor force participation of women can also increase because they will be able to make families and not worry about job security and income. Additionally, the article points out women with college degrees are more likely to receive paid maternity leave which demonstrates the higher return of higher education. Overall, this article shows how the nation is still accommodating women and their entry to the labor force.
