Gap Between Rich and Poor

According to the data from the Census Bureau, Berkeley has the widest gap between rich and poor in the Bay Area. As part of the Occupy Wall Street movement, University of California campus erupted in protest. City leaders said that they were not surprised by the new economic data, which shows that the median income for households headed by non-Hispanic whites is $77,000 and compared with $26,000 for those headed by African-Americans. The reason may be education. Bay Area cities with low scores were primarily middle-income compared to Berkeley's high score that students will have higher income. Another reason for income inequality persisted in Berkeley is the city’s most progressive policies had been blocked by higher authorities. For example, the California Supreme Court let stand a ruling voiding ordinances that require developers to set aside units for low-income residents when they build new apartment complexes. That make the gap between rich and poor becomes bigger.
