A new law was passed in Alabama that permits the interrogation of any suspected undocumented employees. As a result, many immigrant workers, both undocumented and documented, have fled to new states, leaving their jobs at farms and other unskilled "dirty" workplaces. Americans, especially those in Alabama with a high unemployment rate, however, have found these jobs to be dirty, low paying, and beneath them. This relates to our class discussions in various ways. To begin, the American workers who do replace these immigrants are not as efficient and find the work expectations to be unfit. These therefore decreases the total factor productivity of the companies. Even with the same amount of labors, the American workers are producing less than the immigrant workers. Additionally, the placement of this new law nearly parallels the implementation of the border closure that decreased the number of unskilled workers. Now that many Alabama immigrants have fled, there are less unskilled workers which would drive the unskilled wage up. This is apparent as the remaining unskilled workers are demanding higher pay for the type of work given.
