Higher Education and the Economy

President Obama emphasized that we have to regain our world lead in college graduates by 2020 to maintain our future economic competitiveness. Although we still have a positive growth in the percentage of young adults with post-secondary degrees, the other countries are catching up us. He said that investing in education to increase the years of school can raise the economic output. Another issue is that we should also focus on the link between job opportunities and what people know and can do, rather than focusing on the blunt instrument of degrees obtained. For instance, in the US there is evidence that many young adults who have an occupational certificate in a trade that is in demand will yiedd greater economic returns than the pursuit of a baccalaureate degree in the arts and sciences.
