Congress Under Pressure to Reduce Deficit

The government can use monetary or fiscal policy to influence interest rates and bring the country out of a recession. Fiscal policy stems from government spending. This article discusses the government's current spending, and how difficult it is to keep the budget deficit from growing too much. Lawmakers are considering spending $120 billion to renew a Social Security tax cut and committing up to $50 billion more to continue unemployment benefits to people out of work for more than half a year.
